Departing from Scrabster, you’ll journey through the charming town of Thurso before crossing expansive moorland toward Dunnet Head, the northernmost point of mainland Britain. Here, you’ll visit the iconic Dunnet Head Lighthouse, designed by Robert Stevenson and completed in 1831. Standing sentinel over the Pentland Firth, this lighthouse offers stunning views of the Orkney Islands and dramatic sandstone cliffs. The cliffs here are a sanctuary for seabirds, including puffins, razorbills, and kittiwakes, making it a prime spot for birdwatching.
As you continue along the coast, you'll pass the historic Castle of Mey, the former residence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. This charming castle is renowned for its beautiful gardens and panoramic sea views. Nearby, you'll also pass Canisbay Church, an important local landmark with a rich history.
Next, you’ll have some free time in John O'Groats, known as the most northerly settlement on mainland UK. Explore this iconic village, take in the views, and perhaps pick up a souvenir from one of the local shops.
Continuing your journey, you'll stop at Duncansby Head, where you can marvel at the rugged coastline and the striking Duncansby Stacks—imposing sea stacks rising dramatically from the waters. Capture the breathtaking seascapes and the picturesque lighthouse with your camera.
Before returning to the ship, you’ll make brief photo stops in Wick and Thurso, the two largest towns in the area. These stops offer a chance to capture the essence of local life and the unique character of these northern towns.
