Thomas is an Australian of Franconian origin. He resides in the rainforest of Mission Beach in Far North Queensland. He has spent over 20 years as an academic at universities in Melbourne, Hong Kong and Fiji. His involvement in Antarctica goes back to 1991 when he began researching tourism in Antarctica for his PhD at Monash University. Since the first voyage south in 1994 he has participated in over 50 voyages south. In the Arctic he gained experience in Svalbard, West and East Greenland and in the Canadian Arctic. He is a published author and filmmaker and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
